microneedling FAQ & info

What is SkinPen® Microneedling?

SkinPen® by Bellus Medical is the first microneedling device in the world cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, clinically shown to safely and effectively treat facial acne scars for ages 22 and up. With as few as three non-invasive and affordable treatments spaced 30 days apart, you can improve your skin dramatically and most effectively.

WHY IS SKINPEN THE BEST MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT?

There are a few microneedling treatments on the market, but SkinPen is the best of the best. SkinPen is the most versatile and comfortable option, showing powerful results on all skin types. Plus, SkinPen is a leader among microneedling treatments – it was the first of its kind to be cleared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration because of the extensive testing and case studies conducted.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Before your treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to maximize comfort. During your treatment, the needles on the microneedling device create hundreds of micro-injuries which trigger your skin’s natural reaction (to any injury) and it now works to heal itself by creating more collagen, which promotes elasticity and firmness in your skin.

As your body produces more skin cells to heal from the non-visible abrasions, your new skin will have a more even texture and tone.

WHY DO Microneedling?

One of the most common reasons people choose microneedling is to reduce the appearance of acne scars, pore size, fine lines, and sun/age spots. It’s also proven effective on areas other than the face—it can reduce cellulite, scarring, and stretch marks on other areas of the body.

Microneedling can also be effective for those just looking to improve the general elasticity and firmness of their skin. Whether you’re trying to combat collagen loss that naturally happens with age or just give your skin a boost, microneedling is a great, non-invasive option. In addition, microneedling also allows your vitamin-packed serums to more deeply penetrate your skin, allowing their nutrients to have more of an effect.

Who Is A GOOD CANDIDATE?

Almost anyone in good health is a good candidate for microneedling. If you are in the middle of a severe acne breakout or have open abrasions, microneedling could cause worse breakouts.

You should also steer clear of microneedling if you’ve had keloids in the past, are pregnant, or are taking certain medications.

WHAT TO EXPECT POST-TREATMENT?

In the first 24 hours after your first microneedling procedure, you might have some redness, dryness, or irritation which resemble a mild sunburn. It should alleviate within 48-hours. Aftercare will be given to optimize results!

Microneedling VS. Nanoneedling?
What is the difference and what is best for me?

The main difference between the two is the depth that the needles are able to penetrate into the skin. Nano-needling only punctures the first layer of the skin (epidermis) while micro-needling can penetrate into the deep dermis if desired.

Microneedling
  • Medical-like procedure

  • Creates micro-injuries for a wound healing response

  • Treats through the epidermis down to the deep dermis

  • Needle depth from 0.25 to 1.5mm

  • Numbing cream required

  • 24-48 hour downtime

Nanoneedling
  • Cosmetic/spa-like treatment

  • Infuses active serums through tiny nanochannels for increased effectiveness

  • Treats in upper layers of the epidermis

  • Microscopic silicone tips; 1/3 thickness of hair

  • No numbing, downtime, or pain

Microneedling

This procedure uses an actual needle cartridge with 14 fine needles that can be adjusted to different depths. The micro-injuries caused by the procedure stimulate the body’s natural healing process, increasing collagen and elastin production to promote skin rejuvenation. These treatments can be done monthly & are very effective when done in a series.

Nanoneedling

Nanoneedling uses the same type of oscillating motion to treat the skin but the cartridge encompasses mono-crystalline silicone tips. These microscopic hair-like cones separate the cells within the epidermis to allow active serum infusion resulting in an immediate glow with NO downtime. This treatment can also be done as often as 10-14 days.

Which Treatment is Best for What Skin Condition?

Nano and Microneedling have their place in skin rejuvenation for almost every client and they treat many of the same skin conditions. Both treatments will have a positive effect in reducing the appearance of fine lines, improving skin tone and texture, minimizing the appearance of pores, reducing pigmentation, or helping to clear acne and acne scars. Both procedures have the ability to transform the look and feel of your skin!

However, for faster results, deeper acne scars and wrinkles the deeper micro-injuries associated with microneedling and the healing process make microneedling the best choice.
